My interest in estate planning peaked when I volunteered with the Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) for their Wills Clinic. For the Wills Clinic, we volunteered to go to various low-income nursing homes and help clients receive important end of life documents. These individuals have limited assets, and what little they have, has gone towards their care at the assisted living facilities. I developed an incredible amount of empathy for these people and their stories. In the clinic, we took the time to personalize each client’s documents that outlined their wants and needs. I immediately realized that this area of the law was special. Recently my grandmother passed, and I have been watching my father, as executor of her estate, struggle to execute her wishes. With the knowledge I have obtained, I saw that her estate plan was not efficient and needlessly complicated. While trying to grieve, a tremendous burden has been placed on my father’s shoulders. I recognized if someone would have been there to assist her with financial and estate planning, she would have been able to spread her legacy further. I’m part of a family of hard-working blue-collar workers and farmers, and they deserve to keep the assets they’ve earned through their blood, sweat, and tears. To be able to protect their assets, they need representation that respects and understands their desires for the future. Estate planning is for all, and I take pride in working with people to build a steady future.
